Should You Pay for Search Engine Placement?

By Glen Palo

Using a pay-for-placement search engine should be part of any internet marketer's promotion efforts. Bid a price on search terms relevant to your website. The amount of the bid determines the position of the web site whenever a search engine user uses a particular search term.

Goto.com was the first major search engine using the pay-for-placement business model beginning in 1997. Soon others followed. They use such terms as bid-for-location, pay-per-ranking or pay-for-position. This is really the free marketplace in action. The amount of money bid per search word or term determines the placement of each advertisers' listing. The higher the amount bid, the higher priority the listing receives.

There are a number of advantages of using a pay-for-placement search engine. The online advertiser is able to control the placement of each listing. The listing placement is not subject to trying to create the right combination of meta tags, key words, site popularity or other placement criteria used by other search engines. The consumer also benefits as the consumer's search of key words or phrases results in more relevant matches.

There is nothing more frustrating than trying to create meta tags, relevant site content and appropriate words to achieve high placement. After spending hours putting together a web page and submitting it to a number of search engines, one wonders why the web page does not even show up in the top 30. It's even more frustrating when checking out the top listing and the top site is not any better than yours.

Relevancy is the key to using a pay-for-placement search engine. By using key phrases or key words and an appropriate size of bid per term, an advertiser will be able to target specific customers. For example, an advertiser using the key phrase "metal venetian blinds," will attract purchasers searching for metal venetian blinds. The advertiser would be less likely to attract purchasers looking for "just" venetian blinds. If the content of the advertiser's web site contains plenty of information about metal venetian blinds, then the advertiser is more likely to complete the sale.

It can be said that the pay-for-placement search engines deliver qualified prospects to you! These search engines place advertisers' links according to amount bid.
