A Hit by Any Other Name

By Mark Joyner

Once we make the realization that our websites are not going to promote themselves, we usually fall prey to the second Internet marketer's malady:

Hit Fever! "How do I get traffic?! I'll sell my soul for another visit to my website!"

It's just not that easy. The path someone travels to get to your site will have a major impact on the way your site is seen by the web surfer.

You need to target and condition the traffic that comes to your site. Raw hits don't matter if they consist of hordes of porn-hungry teenagers and you are selling bibles. Pay attention to the state of mind someone would be in following a link to your site.

If you don't know how people are getting to your site, you should analyze your server logs on a daily basis. If people are providing links to your site - thank them for it and even take some time to see about modifying the link for maximum impact.

And, if you don't have people linking to your site, give them a reason to do so: a reciprocal link (make is strategic - don't just place the link on some silly page no one sees), a referral bonus, free advertising. Be aggressive. Seek out related sites and strike up partnerships - if you wait for them to come to you, they won't!
