In the woodlands our ancestors must have copulated from behind like the other primates.
In the savannah, humans developed yet another peculiarity: frontal copulation.
To some scientists, face to face sex was a "personalized intercourse," more dignified for these superior animals, humans. It would have been beneath their dignity to indulge in the vulgar and impersonal copulation from behind - the position adopted by other mammals. There are many other explanations for this peculiarity. Most of them are farcical. At this level one might propose that frontal intercourse, in the dangerous, open savannah, where predators could appear from anywhere, at any moment, gave humans the ability to keep an all-round vigilance!
Surely it is more probable that the reasons for frontal intercourse stem from the new developments brought about in the savannah. Fear or anxiety drives an infant into the arms of its mother or mother-figure. Cuddling was a comfort, as it is today, a comfort increased by the warmth of the fat and by the fat mounds on the female body, built up by the concentration of the extra fat. Round or spherical forms are a sign of harmony and perfection in the eyes of primitive human beings. They inspired security, and induced relaxation. Cuddling reassured these frightened beings. Any creature when frightened reverts to infancy, even if only, for a split second, and runs into the first welcoming arms. Human beings will embrace anyone near them, their own sex, even themselves in moments of danger. The greatest monument to the embrace during danger is the skeletons of two people carbonized together by the lava of Vesuvius, in Pompeii.
This comforting and reassuring position of frontal cuddling was the origin, I believe, of frontal copulation. The male, comforted and reassured, got an erection. Sexual intercourse was then almost inevitable. Besides, we must remember that for the human male sexual intercourse is rooted in the need for reassurance of an insecure and incomplete being.
The reason why frontal intercourse remained the preferred position for humans, could be due to the excess of body fat on humans. When the female developed her large buttocks, the male felt that penetration into the vagina was deeper from a frontal position, although even that was not easy. Fat had grown on the stomach and thighs of both sexes. Perhaps this is why man developed the longest penis of all the primates.
The human female found increasing pleasure in frontal intercourse. When cuddling, females find the peace and relaxation essential to their enjoyment of sex. There is an old Slav proverb: "Even if a serpent placed his head against a woman's breast she would stroke it." A female enjoys cuddling. It is part of her maternal instinct. With cuddling she reassures her male or her infant, which to her is like giving a new life.
