Introduction
This is the first part of a six-part article. The six parts are:

1. Brief Description of "Sovereign Individual" Issues
Consider a scale or continuum: At one extreme is the "total slave"; at the other, the "complete Sovereign Individual."

The total slave is the property of a slave owner. Total slaves don't own "their" bodies, "their" time, "their" labor, nor anything else. Total slaves have no freedom of action; they must do what their masters dictate; they may not do what their masters forbid. They may not own any property whatsoever. Total slaves may be harmed, punished, or killed by their masters without restraint.

Complete Sovereign Individuals own their own lives, bodies, time, labor, and whatever other property they can practically command, control, and/or utilize. Theoretically, they have total freedom of action without restraint.

However, in practice they need to tailor their actions in consideration of the interests of others, in order to maximize their "practical degree of sovereignty." If they harm others or their property, they may be retaliated against, or even killed.

The concept "practical degree of sovereignty" is extremely important. Sovereign Individuals seek to maximize the degree to which they enjoy sovereignty in practice. Because others also want to enjoy maximum sovereignty, injudicious actions may lead to conflicts that could rob Sovereign Individuals of some or all of their sovereignty.

So, actions that affect others need to be carefully considered. Furthermore, behavior or moral principles can be formulated to make it easier to calculate optimal actions.

Two broad strategies or styles for the practice of Sovereignty can be distinguished:

(a) The parasite style;

(b) The synergy style.

(a) In the parasitic style, brute force, coercive hierarchies, brainwashing, and deception are used to subjugate, dominate, control, and exploit others -- the victims. Those who resist are punished or killed.

For the parasitic style to work, there have to be vast numbers of weak, naive, gullible victims -- people who lack the ability to recognize all the elements of the parasitic style utilized by parasitic Sovereigns and their collaborators to dupe and exploit their victims.

Because it's easier and more effective to subjugate, dominate, control, and exploit victims via brainwashing and deception, rather than brute force, parasitic Sovereigns have developed an arsenal or special lexicon of words/concepts to hypnotize and numb the brains of their victims. This lexicon I call "Slavespeak" -- see '#TL07A: The Anatomy of Slavespeak'. The power of parasitic Sovereigns depends largely on the acceptance of their Slavespeak lexicon. To the degree that victims use the Slavespeak lexicon, they support the parasitic Sovereigns at the deepest and most fundamental level.

(b) The synergy style of practicing Sovereignty involves many factors, including:

1. Freeing yourself as far as possible from any inner factors that might prevent you from maximizing your practical degree of sovereignty, such as psychological and emotional problems, poor thinking skills, religious superstition, and Slavespeak.

2. Many freedom activists campaign or "fight" for freedom by attempting to educate others, change the system, etc. They essentially operate on the basis of reacting to external forces they view as preventing their freedom. To become a Sovereign Individual, you need to create and build your own freedom on an "inside-out" basis. You have to work on developing yourself and improving your circumstances so you can rise above any external forces aimed at impeding your freedom. You switch from the reactive mode to the creative mode -- see #TL12: How to Achieve Emotional Control and #TL10: How to Achieve and Increase Personal Power. No doubt, for many freedom activists this represents a major gut-wrenching re-orientation, but you have to make this dramatic re-orientation and switch in emphasis if you want to become a Sovereign Individual. 3. Learning Freedom Technology: the practical, knowledge, methods, and skills to live as a Sovereign Individual (as far as this is possible in an unfree world); the street-smart know-how to outwit those who seek to prevent your freedom, and to run rings around them; the means to thrive economically "outside the system"; the practical means to protect your earnings and assets from marauders; the practical means to counterattack (should you wish to do so) those who attempt to prevent your freedom.

4. Extricating yourself as far as possible and practical from the systems of parasitic Sovereigns -- also called "terrocrats" or "territorial gangsters."

5. Linking up with other synergetic Sovereigns and aspiring Sovereigns for mutual support and development, should you wish to or need to.

6. Mastering value creating and money management so as to become financially independent.

7. Supporting and creating Voluntary Organizations to replace Coercive Organizations.

The book The Sovereign Individual by James Dale Davidson and Lord William Reees-Mogg contains some extremely important information on social, economic, and political trends and their implications, and how Sovereign Individuals can adapt their strategies, tactics, and actions to best take advantage of developing and changing situations in the world.
