#2 Secure and Operate an Anonymous Email Address

Online Privacy Manual

Looking to set-up an anonymous email address or two? Want to do it the right way? Discover the #1 mistake being made by others when setting up anonymous accounts and how you can avoid making it too!

Overview

What is an Anonymous Email Address?

An anonymous email address is a email address that has no direct link to the user of the account.

Most first-timers who set-up what they believe to be anonymous accounts have in fact failed to take the proper steps to properly "anonymize" the account.

They look for a "free" email address provider and provide fictional information when signing up for the accounts, but they usually do not properly anonymize the Internet connection before doing so.

It is likely that their IP Address has already been linked to the account if they connected to the sign-up screen using a personal account without using a proxy!

And every time they visit the email service providers website to login to check the messages (without using a proxy) they leave additional technical traces as to their identity. Electronically recorded perhaps to remain documented for many years to come.

If their "anonymous" account is a POP account, and they download their messages using a personal ISP provider... the connection is logged by the mail server, another major security breach that can destroy the anonymity of an account.

How about you? Have you been using an "anonymous" email account set-up before you understood the need for proxies? Do you check your anonymous POP accounts using your personal ISP?

If you made these mistakes you are not alone...we would guess 98% of those who thought they were setting up an anonymous email account did not use a proxy when setting it up, and still do not use a proxy when checking the account!

So STEP ONE in preparing to set-up a good anonymous email address is to use a tested anonymous proxy server when setting up and checking your anonymous account.

[DTF's notes: lookup "VPN" (virtual private network) for a more advanced service available nowadays. Also research issues with VPNs: do they keep logs? Are they secretly operated by privacy-violators? Can you trust their VPN app? Etc. Beware of "free" VPNs and their malware apps! Don't download executable files/scripts unless you know what you're doing!]

It is important to TEST your proxy to make sure it is in fact anonymous. Many servers pass through the IP address of the machine using them! Just "any proxy" is not enough!

For additional security, to be sure that no one is "watching" your data stream from your computer, through your ISP, and to the free email providers site, you will want to surf via a Secure Server Tunnel so your data is encrypted as it leaves your computer.

We recommend Surfola, which provides a secure server connection that you can surf through, so this step is easy to implement.

Once your connection is "anonymized" you will now want to find a service that not only has the features that you are looking for, but also works when visiting via your favorite proxies.

STEP TWO is to find a good quality email address provider with the features you are looking for. This is easily done by looking at the latest selection of free email address conveniently presented for you at:

http://www.emailaddresses.com

They even have a "Be Anonymous" link listing a couple providers with little or no information requested when you get an address with them!

Many sites require Cookies and/or JAVA. You will find that you may need to turn these features on to set-up the account via Surfola. It is better if you try to avoid email providers using JAVA or Cookies if you can, but there a couple worth considering that do use these programming tools.

But it is easy to engage and disengage the cookies and java when need be for any one particular site. And if you are "cleaning your cookies" immediately before and after visiting these sites the "tracks" will be erased.

STEP THREE is to complete the Sign Up Form (if required) using fictional information. It is best to use realistic information as opposed to nonsense if you want the account to keep a low profile.

STEP FOUR is to maintain the level of anonymity you established when you first signed up for the account by making sure to ALWAYS visited your email providers webpage using a tested proxy or review your POP messages using a secured Internet POP interface.

You can find a number of POP mail interfaces at the www.emailaddresses.com website.

Our favorites are Web2Mail and POP3NOW! Both of these services allow for a secure connection so that your "anonymous" email messages remain so as your view the messages over your ISP connection.

These are the basic steps. Of course you will want to avoid referencing subject matter, other email addresses, or anything else in your messages that may compromise your anonymity.

To further protect your identity when using an anonymous account it is best to encrypt all your messages so that no effort can be made to link the dialog in the emails to activities that might expose your identity.
