DO YOU SET A GOOD EXAMPLE?
Leaders set an example by the way they behave. Most effective leaders exhibit the following six behaviors:
1. They are positive. They have faith in their vision. They are excited, enthusiastic, and confident that their dreams can be accomplished. Achieving a vision isn't easy. Few people experience instant success; most meet a string of failures along the way. A good leader remains optimistic.
2. They are committed to excellence and continuous improvement. "We're great," they say, "but we'll get better!" Leaders know the success of even the grandest vision ultimately depends upon thousands of small, seemingly insignificant things being done extremely well.
3. They tolerate failure. In spite of their insistence on excellence, leaders realize not everything goes right. They know how to learn from failure, see past it, and know their followers do the same.
4. They believe passionately in teamwork. Leaders know little is ever accomplished by individuals on their own, but much can be accomplished by people who pool their resources and talents. Leaders discourage rivalry, interpersonal conflict, and competition between groups. Most important, leaders operate as part of the team.
5. They are honest with themselves and others. Trust is the foundation of leadership. Leaders know that once they lose the trust of their followers, they lose the ability to lead.
6. They are fair in dealings with employees. A critical role of the leader is resolving the conflicts that inevitably develop within any group. The leader will gain the trust and respect of employees only if his or her decisions are fair, reasonable, and made in the best interest of the entire group.
Anyone with an idea and enough money can start a business. But, not everyone can lead a business. Are you leading, following, or getting in the way?
