The effects of hypericum extract were compared with those of Maprotiline in a randomized, double-blind study in 24 healthy subjects. The investigations were based on measurements of the resting EEG and on visual and auditory evoked potentials. In the resting EEG, the two medications caused opposite changes in the theta region, but predominantly uniform changes in the alpha and beta regions. Measurements of evoked potentials in the theta and beta regions supported these findings. Overall, the results suggested improvements in cognitive function and also of relaxant properties, especially with the hypericum extract.
