For the past 12 months, I have been fighting with the IRS to prove that my son lives with me. It seems that his biological father has claimed my son on his income tax returns for the earned income credit for all five years of his life. I have responded to every inquiry by the IRS to establish residency of my child, whereas the father has to my knowledge never even bother to submit the first request for information. To make matters worse, I do not receive child support, my son rarely if ever sees his biological father. I just received a letter from the IRS changing my filing status from Head of Household with a dependant to Single. I'm a single mother, working to support my son, and have gone on any type of public assistance. I have sent countless pages of documentation of where my son & myself have lived, where I have been employed, and how we have been supported, but the IRS agent refuses to even look at what has been sent in. I have been asked 3 times for the same information. There has been at least three agents handling my case, and in the most recent certified return receipt letter, it was back to the original agent who is based out of New York. (I live in Texas so why isn't someone here handling it?) My accountant and I have tried countless times to get the point across that my son has always lived with me and been under my care always. I'm supposed to get married in May of next year, but at this point I'm terrified that they will come after my new husband, that I am thinking of calling off the wedding until I get this sorted out. I don't want to have to wait 10 years to get married, but I don't want the IRS to come after my fiance's money & property. I thought that I was entitled to the pursuit of happiness, but with the IRS hounding me, how the hell can I be happy?

WE HAD ASSISTANCE FROM MORE THAN ONE LAWYER AND CPA. WE ASKED FOR ASSISTANCE FROM MORE THAN 12 CONGRESSMEN AND SENATORS. WE HIRED A PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR. I PERSONALLY ATTEMPTED SUICIDE AND THE IRS IS CITED IN THE RECORDS WHERE I WAS TAKEN TO A PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL BY THE POLICE, AFTER THEY BEAT ME UP. THE STORY GOES ON AND. WE ALWAYS FILED EARLY AND NEVER BELONGED TO A TAX PROTEST GROUP. THE IRS ALL MOST KILLED US AND I AM ON MEDICATION.

Due to misinformation from the person we hired to do our taxes in 1991, we were audited and it was determined we owed several thousand dollars. At that time, my husband told me he took care of everything and not to worry. Well, about four years later I find out that we still owed the money which has now quadrupled due to interest!!! My husband has since moved out and not worked in almost three years! I have been the sole supporter of my three sons and was paying the IRS $100 a month, of which 75% was going to interest!!
I was told that since they could not collect from my husband, they could legally go after me. So I continually get bills from the IRS, there seems to be no end in sight!!
I tried collecting child support from my husband but the IRS intervened and took the monies collected from him. I was told by the IRS that they have precedence even over the children!!
I am so sick and tired of the anxiety I suffer having this hanging over me. I can never get ahead enough to offer them a pitiful lump sum!! And meanwhile, my husband does not work so the IRS leave him alone.

I have been fighting for one year to get the IRS to recognize that I have a son that lives with me, and only me, and I get no child support. They changed my filing status from "Head of Household with one Dependant" to "Single - No Dependants".

I could only read half of the "Abuse Report" while eating dinner last night. I stopped and nearly became nausaused. My heart and prayers go out to these people because of these IRS tactics.
I do not see how an IRS agent can sleep at night. Have they got one shred of morality and conscience? Do they look beyond their paper work to gaze into the eyes of children who need shelter and food? Do they realize their parents are trying to put food on the table or to keep the heat on in the winter?

I have been living in a nightmare for the last two years. I have felt like a fugitive from justice. It all stems from the IRS claiming I owe taxes from the tax year 1986.
The first clue I had of this situation arrived on my doorstep in the form of a certified letter July 9, 1996. It was a "*FINAL NOTICE* PAY UP OR WE LEVY YOUR PROPERTY" sort of letter from the IRS. There had been NO previous contact from the IRS. This was the first correspondence that arrived from them alerting me to this situation.
At this point in time the IRS has:

  1. Garnished my paycheck for approximately $17,676.15
  2. Garnished my retirement account for $3,746.61
  3. Auctioned off my 37' sailboat (valued at $32,000.00) for $5,250.00 (while leaving a loan balance of approximately $10,000.00 that still had to be paid to the bank)
  4. Lied to me many times in order to get me to sign away my rights.
All this for what started out as a $ 10,306.58 debt in 1986. Had I been notified years ago the interest and penalties and fines would not have accrued to the point of impossibility of repayment. I have been an honest taxpaying citizen. I have filed a tax return each year and have always had a refund sent to me. Why then did they not notify me? Their answer to these questions is that "I fell through the cracks". Because of a blunder on their part where I fell through their cracks now my family and myself must suffer financial ruin?

My husband's employer, before they were bought out, had him on the books twice (probably a mistake resulting from the new w-2 he filed when we were married). Anyway, when we received two w-4's, I threw one away. When the IRS claimed we only paid half the taxes we owed that year, the new owners of the factory said they couldn't help us and made trouble for my husband at work because we were "troublemakers" due to the IRS "problems". He eventually lost his job because of this IRS "problem" and was unemployed for the rest of the year. My husband is now my ex-husband, the problem with the IRS ruined our marriage and our health. People seem to think trouble with the IRS is contagious and they want you to stay away, even if it wasn't your fault. I moved twice and live in fear that they'll come get me.
