The Story

Chapter Thirty

Jake was too excited to sleep in, although he was up until 3:00 a.m. the night before. Three and a half hours later, at 6:30 a.m., he got up and took a quick shower. He was careful not to wake Jasmine. He quietly left the room and went downstairs to the morning room. He was surprised to find the bright morning room as filled with people as it was with the morning sun. The former students and their teacher were buzzing over some idea. Jake stopped, before anyone saw him, and listened.

"The media perpetuates politics, and politics retards progress," Al Patterson was saying. "My media can turn a lot of people on to Johnny, which will force my competitors to cover him. We must put full effort on getting Johnny into the White House. It's the only way to slash regulations and free the medical industry to advance like the computer industry."

"I was up most of the night, too, thinking about Sally's mission," Jeremiah said, jumping right in. "The promise of immortality has given the false religions a powerful drawing card since the beginning of man. But the church leaders are the only salesmen who can promise the product after you're dead and gone. My Church will now use biological immortality -- before not after you die -- as a central goal that we will strive toward. My Church of God-Man will now become a major supporter of the Association for Curing Aging and Death. And to achieve the goal of biological immortality, we need to elect Jonathan Ward for President, for he'll set free medicine, science, and business from politicization to accomplish this great feat, Project Life -- the most important event of mankind far, far greater than the Manhattan Project or the Moon Project. The Church of God-Man alone would generate eight to ten million votes for Johnny."

"That's beautiful," Al responded, pleased and serious at the same time. "My media approach will be less direct. The idea of living forever is too strange for most people. So, I'll concentrate on what matters most -- their wealth and health. I'll continually emphasize how their buying power will multiply a thousand times when industries are not regulated, just like in the nonregulated computer industry. That'll mean ordinary people will get rich and live like millionaires without changing a thing they're doing now. They'll also live increasingly without disease as the medical industry races forward like the computer industry once it's no longer politicized. I'll drop in, occasionally, the thought of eliminating the ultimate disease -- death."

"I can accelerate public acceptance," Theodore Winters injected. "Once I put up a lot of my own money, everyone will take the Association seriously. But it's got to be a business investment, something I'm seriously planning to make big profits from. I see the PR on this as follows: Mr. Winters believes that Project Life has the greatest profit potential of anything in the history of his company. He believes biological immortality will be the biggest consumer product of all time. ...If the PR goes like that, then everyone'll want in. The Association will be flooded with investors. Sally, you must put together a sliding-scale projection of how long it would take with X amount of funds. I'll start by putting 50% of my profits into the Association, and I'll raise that in increments up to 80% or 90% under two conditions: 1) as long as there's a chance to cure aging in my lifetime, and 2) as long as I have the controlling ownership of the product."

"Do you realize the amount of money you're talking about?" Sally stammered in amazement.

"Of course I do, it's my company!" Theodore laughed. "But what better way to spend my money. You said it yourself: `The only thing really, really wrong with life is death.' I've spent my life solving every problem I've ever encountered. Death is the most personal problem multiplied by infinity. So, I'm determined to do everything I can to solve it. And believe me, as much as the money is Sally, that's not my greatest contribution. My greatest contribution is taking the controlling, commercial responsibility. By doing that, I'll lift your breakthroughs and solve all the commercial problems and limitations...not unlike lifting Fleming's penicillin from a mold to a mass commercial product. You give me the breakthrough, and I'll market it to the world!"

No one doubted Theodore Winters. They all knew he was not bragging. Just as they knew 27 years ago, they knew today that once they gave him a product, he would figure out how to profitably, affordably bring it to society. Sally, Al, Jeremiah, and the rest radiated with confidence knowing Theodore's heart and soul was into the Project Life.

"The timing...oh, the timing is good," Ian said, his arms crossed across his chest as he stood up but never looked up. He was pacing and staring at the floor. Jake was not sure if Ian even realized he was voicing his thoughts. "My first paper since the stadium experiment will be released later this month. In it I'm revealing the first predictive-chart breakthrough since Mendeleyev's Periodic Table in 1871. My Overlay Charts will demonstrate that advanced God-Man created the Universe and controls the mass/energy dynamics of the cosmos. 1 Think about it -- wow. My Overlay Charts will prove that, although the concept God and heaven are antiquated and downright silly, a Civilization of the Universe does exist, and it was created and is controlled by immortal God-Man. I will add a postscript about the new Association for Curing Aging and Death that demonstrates rational man's inevitable journey to preserve his consciousness, moving us closer to joining our immortal brethren throughout the Universe. Oh my, the academe will have a harder time with this than they did with Darwin's Natural Selection." Ian burst into laughter. Jake sat down on a chair in the corner. No, Jake thought, these people have no external authorities whatsoever. They...they're beyond any and all authorities. These people are the authorities. Their minds are limitless.

"Yes, Ian. Yes. Yes. Yes!" Al acknowledged. "I see what you're saying, and I'll give it beautiful coverage. Preserving our own consciousness is the natural course of God-Man...beautiful!"

"I've always focussed on the fundamental of first achieving happiness to open up one's capacity to love," Natasha said. "I've always talked on the air about achieving happiness through making values for society. The biggest problem, though, is that opportunity is so limited out there. But with Johnny in the oval office, opportunity would skyrocket in his free, Neo-Tech society." Jasmine silently slipped in and sat on Jake's lap, leaning against his chest, feeling cozy and content. Natasha continued talking, not seeing Jake and Jasmine in the back. "People today are so stagnant. Twenty-three million people listen to me five days a week. Within a few months, I'll convince the majority of them to vote for Jonathan, because his Neo-Tech Party will free society. Opportunities for people to achieve the happiness and love they so desire will flood society."

Jake started adding numbers in his head: eight million in Jeremiah's church, twenty-three million who listen to Natasha, that's thirty-one million people. Wow, that almost would be enough to win a three-way election. Jake got excited. This just might work!

"I have never done this before, but I can see the time is right." Jake looked around the room, not sure who was talking. Then Jake saw him, between Rico and Debbie, seated directly across the room. It was Bobby speaking. "I show people the person they were meant to be. I've always turned each client inward to discover his or her Friday-Night Essence. With no escape from the crippling effects of politics, I've never discussed politics with my clients. Now, with an escape from the crippling effects of politics an option for us through Johnny and his Neo-Tech Party, I'll stress to my clients the importance of ending politicization of business so they can soar. My clients deeply believe in me and my reps because we change their lives for the better. They'll listen to what my reps have to say to them. And my clients will spread the good news like a cool breeze across their landscapes of peers and friends."

"Word of mouth is powerful, Robert. And your clients go on to become top management; they hold lots of power," Salinski said, winking at Bobby and smoothly carrying this most fascinating conversation along. "Similarly, my law firm deals with the pulse and power of civilization -- the market businessmen. The destructive legal and political world knows me and fears me. The productive business world, where all legitimate power and values come from, loves me. My Widescope Accounting Lawyers will now show the market businessmen their definitive savior: Jonathan Ward and his Neo-Tech Party. His Universal Constitution is justice in its purest form. I've memorized it:

The Universal Constitution

Preamble

The purpose of human life is to prosper and live happily. The function of society is to guarantee those conditions that allow all individuals to fulfill their purpose. Those conditions can be guaranteed through a constitution that forbids the use of initiatory force or coercion by any person or group against any individual:

The Constitution

Article 1: No person, group of persons, or government may initiate force, threat of force, or fraud against any individual's self or property.

Article 2: Force may be morally and legally used only in defense against those who violate Article 1.

Article 3: No exceptions shall ever exist to Articles 1 and 2.

Bruce Salinski looked at Jonathan and said, "That's brilliant, Jonathan. That would end all abuse, forever. And without abuse, especially without governments saddling and riding the business world, the values businesses brought to the world would multiply faster than what the computer industry has enjoyed."

Jonathan stood up and thanked Salinski and the others. Then he said, "Now, the question remains: why am I running for President? What motives lurk deep within me? No matter how good my political ideas might be, my politics would all cycle back to bad if I had any other subconscious motives besides what we've been planning today. For example, if I wanted to become known as the man who cleaned up our government, or if I wanted the glory of saving our businesses...then I would have deeper motives of glory and, ultimately, power. If my political agenda was an end in itself, then everything would eventually cycle back to bad. But my political agenda is not an end in itself. It's just part of the ride to a more distant destination that brings us together today.

"Here today, I hear and feel my deepest motive in life within each of you. Ever since third grade, I could never accept the idea of people dying. It all started through Miss Annabelle's lectures: my sudden awakening to values, especially the greatest value in the Universe -- human life. I was so profoundly affected by seeing Sally struggle with the inevitable loss of her mom." Jonathan glanced over at Sally. She smiled at him like a loving sister. Jake suddenly saw them as children again, for they looked so innocent. "I used to feel so sorry for Sally and her mom. I'd lie awake at night thinking there must be some way to fix that tragedy in our otherwise beautiful world. The idea that her wonderful mother would die soon had a lasting effect on me. As a teenager, I found myself thinking the unthinkable: how do we cure fatal diseases...including aging? Slowly, persistently, I put together the mental puzzle to ultimately curing death by creating the sociopolitical conditions to spring free talented geniuses like Sally and Theodore. I became convinced the geniuses in medicine, science, and business could do it if not held back by the power manipulators in government. That brought me to politics. I struggled for years trying to communicate my idea to people. They'd either laugh at me or glaze over in boredom. To them, I was somewhere between an overly optimistic dreamer and a fanatical weirdo. After sticking to it for fourteen years, I gradually figured out the formula that created a buzz, even standing ovations, wherever I'd go. I abandoned political ideas and created the Six Visions campaign. People were too busy to listen about politics, no matter how good my ideas were. I left that politics of good ideas to the hapless Libertarians. Then I created my Six Neothink Visions into the future. Let me tell you, people were not too busy to hear about how they would become millionaires and romantic lovers! They didn't care about politics, but they loved hearing about their own prosperity explosion. Suddenly, I had large crowds around me every place I spoke. But underneath it all, my personal motive is what we all here realize we want -- to save my life and my loved ones. As Sally so poignantly expressed: I never again want to look into a casket, down at another loved one. What we are doing here today, bringing together our strengths in business, medicine, science, politics, and media, is the way to accomplish Project Life. Because Project Life is my ultimate goal in life, my deepest motive is right for this; I am the right person for the presidential run. I have no motives for fame, glory, or power. I just cannot accept letting the greatest value in the Universe perish because, as Sally suggested, the protoplasm gives out."

Jake looked into Jasmine's eyes as if he were startled. "What is it?" she whispered. But Jake's mind was on fire. He stood up and lifted her with the strength of three men and placed her gently back on the chair. "I see it!" he yelled. Everyone looked over in surprise, not having noticed him there before now. "Mr. Melbourne," he shouted in his exuberance, "don't you see it? It's what you told us last night!"

Mr. Melbourne smiled knowingly and nodded at Jake.

"You're creating a Neothink puzzle here," Jake continued. "No, let's call it a Neothink superpuzzle. What Jonathan's saying is that his political agenda is just a piece to a larger puzzle -- a superpuzzle you're planning today to go out there and build. You're snapping together the puzzle pieces that will bring you that never-before-seen puzzle picture of biological immortality. You're creating the future, and you're paving the road of the present to bring about that future -- that never-before-seen puzzle picture. You fifteen or so people -- you're going to control...no, I mean, you're going to create the future of the world!"

Jake was panting from excitement. This revelation astounded him. He had read before about the Illuminati who supposedly controlled the world, and he always dismissed it as coming from paranoid conspiracy theorists. But as he stood there panting, he wondered if it were true. Perhaps there was a group of people using Neothink to control the world as he had just witnessed. But this group...they were going to take civilization out of the anticivilization into the immortal Civilization of the Universe. In that new world, control of the world would no longer be needed.

Al Patterson, who was standing, walked over to Jake and put his hand on Jake's shoulder. "Make that seventeen people," he said. "Son, I read your booklet last night. I was moved by your conceptual grasp of what is going on here, and I was impressed by the quality of the writing. It was piercing, entertaining, and you captured the big picture. I want you and Jasmine to work as a team, working for me on this mission."

Jake's body went numb. He looked at Jasmine whose mouth had dropped open in shock. At that moment, a wave of adrenaline rushed up from his feet, thawing his legs, up into his torso. Suddenly he knew his deep motivational root had come to life. At that instance, he knew the person he was meant to be.

"I'd be honored to be part of this great mission," he said strongly and without stutter.

"Oh yes, me too," Jasmine echoed.

The missing pieces were clear. The future was waiting for these omnipotent people to snap together. The energy in that room radiated with such force that Jake fantasized, for a moment, the walls of the morning room blowing apart and waves of energy flowing out of this room, across the world, washing away the illusions, stimulating the people. For, Jake had just witnessed the big bang of the Civilization of the Universe.

In his moment of finding himself, Jake met eyes with Miss Annabelle. She looked on the proceedings like a proud mother. Her children were together again. And this time, they would do something so magnificent as to save all human life.
