STEP FIVE: MAKE PERFORMANCE MATTER BY SHARING THE REWARDS

Feedback and positive reinforcement are crucial for building a winning team. Your scoreboard takes care of feedback. Now you must use reinforcement to make employees care about their performance. Praise employees, give them recognition for improved
performance, and reward progress toward goals in a meaningful way. Consider offering awards such as caps, buttons, plaques, or certificates for improved performance, or for achieving goals. Try to tie these gifts to your motto. For example, if your motto is "Service First," you could start a "Service First Club" where everyone who achieves a certain level of performance can win a cap, button, or coffee cup with "Service First" printed on it. Make sure everyone has a fair opportunity to win the award, and follow the rules for reinforcing employees' behavior we discussed in Chapter 8. Eventually, you should consider tying employees' compensation to their performance in the areas you are tracking, as we suggested in Chapter 5.
