STEP SIX: MAKE SURE EMPLOYEES UNDERSTAND THEIR ROLES AND HAVE A CHANCE TO BECOME INVOLVED IN IMPROVING PERFORMANCE
Your employees' success in reaching their performance goals depends upon two things. First, they must understand the goals and how their behavior contributes to attaining them. Second, they must have a way to become involved in deciding how to change their behavior to achieve the goals.
The best way to achieve both of these is to meet with your employees on a regular basis (once a month or once a week) to discuss performance. In these meetings, be sure to
Reinforce good or improved performance by pointing out things individuals (or the group) did that contributed to an improvement in performance.
Review current performance in the areas you are tracking. Bring your graphs to the meeting and point out any changes in performance.
Brainstorm with your employees to get ideas for improving performance through changes in employee behavior.
Conclude the meeting by agreeing on specific action that will be taken to improve performance, and assign individual employees responsibility for implementing these changes. At subsequent meeting, follow up on these plans by asking these employees to report on what was done.
Following these basic guidelines will help you turn your employees into a winning team.
